SITE QUESTIONS [back to top]

How do I work the Music Player?
First, click on one of the release titles in the list (i.e. Fantastic Day EP). The cover for that release will appear in the left window, and the tracks to the right. Click a track to play. You can use the little up-arrow/eject-button between the image and the song list to return to the main menu.

Where's all this free music I've been hearing about?
Well, you can check the Weblog, where I try to post a free downloadable tune each month or so. Year-end Weblog collections can be found here. Also, there are a few official Free releases up here! Currently:

Back in Time / Demi Moore Single
Slave to the Tuna EP
Hoga-Rama EP

How does buying songs work?
From the Music page, click on a release to see its info. You'll have the choice of buying a CD (if available) or downloads of either the full release or individual songs. Just click your choice. Payments are secure and handled by PayPal. You'll also get the pleasure of knowing your payment is going directly to the artist (me), and not being filtered through some huge corporate beast.

CD orders are generally shipped the next business day (1st Class in the USA, Air Mail elsewhere). For downloads, you'll receive an email containing special links to the songs you've ordered. The links usually expire within 24 hours, so don't dally! If you have any questions or trouble, please let me know.

I'd like to buy some of your music but I don't have a PayPal account.
Please rephrase that in the form of a question.

Okay, how do I buy music without a PayPal account?
Thanks for asking! I believe you can now use your major credit card through PayPal without having an account with them. Alternatively, you can go to CDBaby, iTunes, IndepenDisc or one of the other venues listed on the Links page. Or, contact me if you'd like to send a check or money order.

MUSIC QUESTIONS [back to top]

Will your music play on my iPod/Rio/Other MP3 Player?
Absolutely. The downloadable songs are unprotected mp3s, so you can play them with almost anything (well...not your Granny's air freshener, but you know what I mean). You can even share them with your friends...just be sure to tell them where you got 'em.

Can I burn the songs onto a CD?
As long as it's for your personal use (which includes sharing with friends). Just don't put them on a disc and then sell them, a'ight?

Can I play your songs on my podcast/radio show?
I encourage it. Please let me know so I can listen in. I do ask that you, when possible, please mention this website so your listeners can find the songs. And be sure to check back for new stuff!

How do I license your music for use in my film/TV/multimedia project?
Really, that's what I'd like to do when I grow up, so please be in touch with me. I'm the sole owner of all the music on this site, so licensing is quick, easy and a very pleasant experience. I'm also available to create music specifically for your project.

GENERAL QUESTIONS [back to top]

Where does the name The Marble Tea come from?
It comes from the title of a very rare book of poems by Richard Brautigan called Lay the Marble Tea. He in turn took that title from a poem by Emily Dickinson (The grave my little cottage is / Where, keeping house for thee, / I make my parlor orderly / and lay the marble tea...).

Who's in the band?
It's basically just me (Knight), but the phenomenally talented Jeff Booth has provided his magic touch upon occasion.

Will you play a show in my town?
Probably not, but thanks for asking. I haven't played live in 15 years now, so even if I were inclined it would be a pretty rusty affair. Writing and recording songs is most fun for me, so that's what I concentrate on. I do , however, bandy about the notion of playing out every now and then, so I won't say it's totally out of the question...sometime...down the line...in the future...maybe.

How do you decide which songs to sell and which to give away?
Good question! A number of factors come into play, but usually the free ones are ones that I'm not sure would fit into a release. They're generally demos or experiments that I reserve the right to revisit and tweak at later dates, though occasionally they're full-blown arrangements.

What gear do you use to record your songs?
Geek alert! The nucleus is a Power Mac G5 running Logic Pro software with various plug-ins (I used to use Pro Tools LE - witness the I'm Batman EP - but switched to Logic and really like it). There's also an Apogee Duet connecting the Soundcraft Compact4 mixer, Studio Projects VTB1 mic pre-amp, and FMR RNC Compressor to the computer. The monitors are M-Audio BX5a's and the midi keyboard is an M-Audio Keystation 49e.

Guitars: Epiphone Les Paul Jr Special II, '65 Fender Mustang, '73 Gibson Gospel acoustic, a little Kay acoustic that Jeff gave me, and a Dean Playmate bass guitar (blue). I have a little Vox amp, but I usually record direct so as not to disturb the neighbors. For mics, I've got a couple of those MXLs and the ubiquitous SM57. There are a few other little noise-makey things around here as well.

Your store's pretty cool. Where can I get one for my band/label?
It is kinda cool, isn't it. It takes a lot of coding & tweaking, but they can install it for you for a nominal fee. Check it out:

I like what you're doing. Can I buy you a sandwich or help out in some way?

Thanks, that's very generous of you! Telling everyone you know always helps and doesn't cost a dime, particularly if they're film/TV people looking to license songs. As far as that sandwich goes, you're always free to make a financial contribution by clicking the tip jar below - even the smallest amount is cherished, but it's, like, totally not necessary, dude!
